Weather communication without loss of data and without loss of time

Traditional display formats, which originate from the print era and does not make use of the new interactive technologies are dominating the weather communication also in the energy business. We found out, that these cause a loss of data, which before had been costly generated as well as a loss of time to gain access to this information.

In GeoWeather the entire complexity of weather informations is presented in one single display. The dynamic timeline takes center stage, to which all the different aspects of information are assigned. Unlimeted zoomable animations on the map for all forecast periods, nowcast, short rage forecast, long range forecast, as well as the respective curve charts. It is only a small step, to synchronise this timeline with the timetable of daily upcoming decisions of the trader.

Loss of information caused by maps without zoom and without animation

The precision of today's numerical weather prediction, which go up to a resolution of 1,5km can only be communicated with zoomable maps and fast animations. Here you see the prototype of GeoWeather . Yet a resolution of 10 km is not any more presentable without zoom. Without zoom the geografical precision af the data is lost. Without a fast animation the information about the temporal weather development is lost.

The only provider, who today offers zoomable weather animations for numerical weather prediction forecasts ( however not especially for the energy market) is meteoblue with Windyty . GeoWeather is 6 to 7 times faster than Windyty. A wind prediction for the next 36 hours, which takes with GeoWeather tight 10 sec, lasts with Windyty ca 1:20 min. In the energy business the presentation of the wind forecast like in Windyty is not sufficient, because in different hights , the wind has different speeds . The prediction in hub hight requires the vertical dimension. As communication designer with professional experience in 3D computer animation, we are experts in this field.

Loss of time caused by a navigation labyrinth

The weather prediction for the energy market presents itself as a side by side mingle-mangle of different styles and technologies: static maps, curve charts, zoomable maps without animation, maps without zoom with animation, which leads to a huge complexity and to a navigation labyrinth. At most two dimensions are visualised. In the map visualisations the time dimension is missing. In the curve charts , which have the time dimension, the spatial dimension is missing. Spatiotemporal information, which in fact belong together are seperated into different visualisations with different styles and the user has to piece the different aspects of weather information form different places together by himself.
